Falling firmly in the middle ground of so-so CGI animation is Charlie the Wonderdog voiced by the lone star name talent in the cast Owen Wilson in his familiar charm in laid back comfort zone as Charlie the mutt and pet to Jacob the young boy who owns him.
But it all changes when Charlie plus the neighbour’s cat are beamed up to a spaceship in the middle of the night where a petulant alien prince quickly gets bored of them and they are returned to Earth with Charlie now the wonderdog of the title with superpowers whereas the cat is a giant corpulent blob that now rules the roost envious that his doggy neighbour is adored because of his superpowers that has saved lives. What’s more the female US President, a sort of Hilary Clinton with a Trump like sensibility, utilizes Charlie the Wonderdog as a high profile promotional tool for her for her dog food business.
Way back in 2001 we had ‘Cats and Dogs’ a live action film that had the animals at war with one another with cats once again the evil nemesis of the dogs – it’s never the other way round – and it’s the same here with the cat the villain of the piece. The film moves along at a breakneck speed but that might well be to cover up a paucity of ideas in an episodic plot with none of the nuance of the Pixar films where there’s often jokes for the grown ups who will be taking their kids to see this.
Ironically with a film with a major plot point about dog food Charlie the Wonderdog is something of a dog’s dinner.
