It’s now been seven years since the last Star Wars trilogy ended and since then we’ve had a whole load of spin off TV series, the most successful of which is The Mandalorian who, along with baby Yoda, have made a unlikely but highly successful on screen partnership. So now they transfer to the big screen with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu film with high expectation.
The Mandalorian and Grogu mission…..
Opening with a thrilling action packed sequence it sees The Mandalorian now working for the New Republic assigned missions by Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) hunting down remnant members of the Imperials scattered across the Galaxy. To this end Ward has struck a deal with the duplicitous Hutt clan (Jabba is long dead) to locate and rescue their kidnapped cousin and in return the Hutt’s will give them the identity of a powerful Imperial warlord (who looks a little like the late cockney gangster Dave Courtney). With Grogu by his side the pair go off to locate, rescue and repatriate the Hutt cousin in a series of explosive set pieces and plot twists.
What to expect….
Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor there’s something of the Western about what could be seen as a big screen fourth series but this is very much a movie writ ever larger in the excellent IMAX format. It’s accessible for audience to unfamiliar with the TV series and there’s a lot to like here with throwbacks to the original (and best) trilogy although it swerves the inclusion of any lightsabres. Whereas Lucas own prequel was a oversaturated CGI fest this combines practical effects, the occasional stop motion and CGI (occassionally a bit wobbly) to great effect in a far more satisfying manner although purists will perhaps inevitably complain that there’s a definite eye to merchandising for the kids with a group of new side characters.
Is the Force strong with this one?
This is very much ballistics, bombs, blasts and blazes and the spectacle keeps you hooked when combined with the story beats making this a much needed invigorating return to form for the franchise.
