Casper Van Dien, Paul Verhoven and Starship Troopers!

Actor Casper van Dien has over 160 credits and counting stretching all the way back to 1990 with appearance sin TV series Beverley Hills 90120, Married with children & The Other Limits as well a load of movies that include Tim Burton’s ‘Sleepy Hollow’ & Robert Rodriguez, ‘Alita’. But probably his most beloved film is 1997’s Starship Troopers

The story of Starship Troopers

The film is set  in a not-so-distant future, with the Earth governed by the militaristic United Citizen Federation and multitudes of highly evolved Klendathu Arachnids threatening the safety of our solar system, high-school athlete Johnny Rico (Casper van Dien) and three of his hometown friends join up to do their part. And to ensure humankind’s future, an all-out invasion has begun; however, in this far-off exoplanet hostile to life as we know it, brute force alone and conventional strategies won’t cut it. Now, the unstoppable Bug Army is at the gates and is looks like  Rico and his fellow Starship Troopers will end up serving as cannon fodder.

The mad Dutchman Paul Verhoeven….

Having  cost £105m to make the film earned a meagre $121m at the box office but it’s cult status spawned two sequels and video games that Van Dien was heavily involved. Directed by the inimitable Paul Verhoeven who in the words of Austin Powers ‘Goldmember’ is ‘that crazy Dutch bastard’ his on set behaviour is the stuff of legend. We asked Casper about his most memorable experiences of working with the director and this is what he told us…..
