It’s been a busy year for Sidney Sweeney and The Housemaid is the last film release of 2025 and sees her playing the title role. As Millie she puts on a pair of glasses, an appropriate metaphor, because as we will soon see, little is at it seems, and she arrives at the home of wealthy socialites Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) who has designed the house himself and Nina (Amanda Seyfried) for a job interview as a live in housemaid and childminder to their entitled brat of a daughter Cece (Indiana Elle).
Millie lands the job but day one finds her arriving at the house to find it in disarray, with broken dishes in the kitchen and Nina a screaming harridan blaming the housemaid for everything in a scene surely based on the Netflix viewing figures being read by Meghan Markle. But when Nina calms down she excuses herself and her husband asking Millie, ‘What sort of monsters are we?’ – this surely must be based on a broken NDA from a former Montecito household employee.
With the film narrated in Millie’s voiceover from her journal, things soon start to become clear as the films goes into flashback mode to explain certain incidents. Seyfried relishes the histrionic explosive speeches and Sweeney maintains her sultry sweet screen siren persona in a film orchestrated by Paul Feig who had proved time and again how good he is with female led casts.
For Sweeney this is the fourth film this year after the all star ‘Eden’ bombed (and may not even be released in the UK now), ‘Echo Valley’ went to streaming and a hoped for awards nominee, ‘Christy’ was overlooked and also bombed. The Housemaid is far more fun and should end the year for her on an upbeat in what is an often enjoyably unhinged potboiler.
