Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

Released in 1988 Die Hard was Bruce Willis’ second feature film after the flop comedy, ‘Blind Date’ with Kim Basinger. Released in the US in July 1988 ( the UK got it in February 1989) it was an out and out action film and was a change in role from Willis’ normal comic persona that had made him a star in the TV series ‘Moonlighting’.

The story….

Die Hard saw him as New York City cop, John McClane, trying to save his estranged wife and several others taken hostage by terrorists during a Christmas Eve party at the Nakatomi Plaza Skyscraper in Los Angeles, California.

The director’s view of whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie….

The film was helmed by director John McTiernan it was only his third feature film after the supernatural horror ‘Nomads’ (1986) with a pre Bond Pierce Brosnan. But his second film, ‘Predator’ would change things for him and signalled him out as a capable action director and Die Hard would cement that reputation. Costing a modest $28m the film would eventually earn $143m and make Willis a bona fide action star with a a flurry of ever disappointing sequels and a rumoured prequel was canned after the actor devastating diagnosis of a degenerative illness saw him retire.

That question is asked….

Still regarded as one of the best modern day actions films but what soon emerged was the question, ‘Is Die Hard a Christmas film?’ and it soon become a modern day pop culture debate. In London at a major screening of the film director McTiernan did a Q&A in front of an audience with respected film journalist Ian Nathan and the question was finally asked, ‘Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?’

This is the answer he gave….
