With immigration remaining a hot topic Dreamers is a timely reminder of the humanity behind the issue that centres on Isio (Ronke Adekoluejo) a Nigerian woman who had been arrested having been caught working illegally and now locked up in a women’s detention centre. With a prison yard mentality if bullying and intimidation its little wonder that she keeps herself to herself until she is befriended by room mate Farah (Ann Akinhirin) . Initially wary of Isio a friendship develops as she is guided how to stay out of trouble within the confines of the centre. But it develops beyond a friendship into a romance and an escape plan is hatched.
Written and directed by Joy Gharoru-Akpojotor the film does shy away from the unpleasantries of detention centres. Dreamers is not really a political film but instead is far more of a human drama. But running at a brisk 75 minutes means the characterization is not explored as fully as might be hoped and the supporting characters are often caricatures. But that aside the two leads have a credible on screen relationship as a bond develops in a film that is often languid in pacing which does allow for nuance as Isio clings onto a desperate if naïve hope for asylum to be granted,
