It’s been nine years since we Zootropolis (or ‘Zootopia’ in the US) , a film that did record business breaking the $1b box office barrier and went on to deservedly win an Oscar for Best Animated feature film. Zootropolis 2 is the much anticipated sequel that picks up with keen cop Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and her sidekick foxy friend Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) back on the beat. Having saved Zootropolis they have been promoted to an elite team of experienced cops begrudgingly having to accept that these short in service newbies are joining their team of years longs covert cop crime busting.
The city is still split up by weather walls which control the climate for the relevant animals in the districts such as Tundra town that’s run by the well to do Lynxley family. But one animal that has been banished from the metropolis are snakes and reptiles and they’re not happy about having been ostracised.
Judy and Nick are already out fighting crime even before the early morning team talk from Chief Bogo (Idis Elba) has begun with their own undercover operation in the city dock lands which goes awry and sees them demoted to desk detail. Despite this the eager beaver Judy discovers something and persuades Nick to carry on their investigation that centres on a valuable journal and along with slippery serpent Gary De’Snake ( Ke Huy Quan) whose plan is to steal it during the glitzy City Ball.
Much like the first film Zootropolis 2 has a decent plot where everything is not as it seems which plays into the films overall theme about our perception of others and which is hammered home in a final scene just in case audiences miss it.
But it’s a minor quibble because as written and co-ditected by Jared Bush there’s an immense amount to enjoy in this sequel with the world building expanding and further developed to spectacular effect with the films stunning animation. And like the first film there’s a load of in jokes, parodies and neat visual jokes for the adults that takes in ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Babe’ and even The Shining and Silence of the Lambs and there’s a load of great throwaway gags that means Zootropolis 2 will reward a second viewing.
……and do wait for the very end of the credits with a scene that hints at Zootropolis 3!
