The Heat is on…
The anticipation for Michael Mann’s long awaited and much anticipated sequel continues with the latest Heat 2 news with filming to start in September that will run until March 2027. Much of the news understandably centres around the casting as the original film having starred Robert De Niro (McCaulley), Al Pacino (Hanna), Val Kilmer (Shiherlis), Jon Voight (Nate) and Tom Sizemore and as the film is a prequel the talk is just who will play younger versions of the characters these actors played.
The Heat 2 plot…
The new casting is that Adam Driver will play a new character Otis Lloyd Wardell, a serial rapist and psychopathic murderer who leads a gang of vicious home invaders. Heat 2 is based on director Michael Mann’s book that is both a prequel (1988) and sequel (2000) where Wardell has a major run-in with De Niro’s McCauley, with his actions impacting the kind of man McCauley is in the original film. At the same time, the case against Wardell is why Hanna quits the Chicago PD. Wardell then plays a big part in the scenes set in 2000 Los Angeles with Shiherlis and Hanna. He is the reason for the split timeline structure of the narrative.
The casting….
So what seems to be almost certain is that Leonardo DiCaprio will play Chris Shiherlis, Christian Bale will be Vincent Hanna and Stephen Graham will be Neil McCauley. Added to that is rumoured to be Jason Clarke and believed to be playing Nate.
There’s a big budget for the film rumoured to be in the region of $200m and was the cause of much debate by many of the studios in financing the film meaning that almost inevitably it would be one of the streamers that would fund it and hence it lading with Amazon MGM Studios
