Scary Movie – REVIEW

movie flex

With 2025 having been an excellent year for horror it’s rich pickings to be parody and thirteen years after the last film, Scary Movie  returns for a sixth outing with the Wayans brothers once again writing and staring  joined by series regulars Anna Faris and Regina Hall.

How it all begins…

In keeping with the previous films this sixth Scary Movie riffs heavily on the Scream franchise which inspired the franchise in the first place even going so far as to use that films originally intended title for themselves. This sixth film has not changed its format with the usual star cameo opening scene that the Scream films maintain also and here sees Teyana Taylor in her usual ghetto girl persona, and gets to use a line from, ‘One Battle after Another’ before we settle into the plot. We say plot but keeping it’s continuity with the franchise it is the same as several of the previous films – a ghost faced killer is bumping off the population of Woodsville.

What can you expect from this latest Scary movie?

As with the entire franchise what plot there is a vehicle to hang a load of parodies and jokes in the trademark scattergun style of the series. What’s refreshing is that there’s no concession to political correctness or the current era of woke and so it’s open season on  everyone and anything and takes shot at the trans community, influencers and of course the Epstein files. And in keeping with a scattergun approach some hit but many miss. The team indulge their love of parody (there’s an especially good one for the recent Michael Jackson biopic) and there’s a wealth of films ripe for such with Smile, Long legs, The Substance and Sinners being just some of many whilst they also go back to ‘Get out’ which is ten years old now. And therein lies the problem with parody in that it quickly dates the film – how many of the films parodied in the original film in 2000 beside Scream have any resonance for audiences who may not even have been born when it was first released?

End credits scene? : Yes, several that run to midway through the credits
