Video nasty….
Amongst the living dead movies probably one of the most notorious films is Zombie Flesh Eaters from Italian director Lucio Fulci that starred Ian McCulloch & Auretta Gay. Typically full on gore saw the film land on the list of 72 films banned or more specifically refused a certificate in the early 1980’s when just about any film that had never been certified for cinema release in the UK saw it instead released on the burgeoning home video market that was at that time unregulated and Fulci’s film was never going to see a cinema release in the UK
The gore in Zombie Flesh Eaters…
Released in 1979 the film followed a group of strangers searching for a young woman’s missing father arrive at a tropical island where a doctor desperately seeks the cause and cure of a recent epidemic of the undead. Many of the at times extremely graphic scenes of Zombie carnage would be cut most notorious a splinter in the eyeball amongst many others scenes.
Ian McCulloch reveals how badly Auretta Gay was treated…
Starring British actor Ian McCulloch he had appeared in a number of highly regarded TV series that had included Colditz, Crown Court, Dr Finlay’s casebook and Secret Army but Zombie Flesh Eaters was unlike anything he had appeared in before. Director Fulci was something of taskmaster and having cast actress Auretta Gay in a lead role he was quickly to get frustrated with her on set in a manner that just would e not be tolerated by modern film making standards. Her career lasted only four films of which Zombie Flesh eaters was only her second film.
We got to chat to Ian McCulloch who revealed just how Lucio Fulci treated Auretta Gay on the set of Zombie Flesh Eaters. Here’s what he revealed….
