Did you spot those Mike Myers cameos ?

So whilst Mike Myers achieved huge success with Wayne’s World and especially the Austen Powers films it was the catastrophic critical and commercial failure of the ‘The Love Guru’ a film that bombed  making only $40m worldwide that saw the star retreat from the big screen preferring to voice the various Shrek sequels and spin offs.  But what is less known is that there have been a number Mike Myers cameos in films ever since with audiences watching him perhaps unaware that it is Mike Myers.

Those Mike Myers cameos on full…

That fist incarnation was an unexpected casting by Quentin Tarantino in 2009’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ where he appeared as general Ed Fenech. Under light prosthetics it was still discernibly him although you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was UK comedian David Mitchell (see the image on the left in the main photo above) and the  role was in a pivotal scene that involved the recruitment of Michael Fassbender’s character, Lieuntenat Hicox

Myers next cropped up on screen nine years later in the Margot Robbie -Simon Pegg 2018 film ‘Terminal’ and was immediately identifiable as Mike Myers but the film was a flop and largely ignored and it’s hard to see what the appeal of the role was for him apart maybe from working with the ascendant star Robbie.

But that same year same him going wholly unrecognised in the Oscar winning Bohemian Rhapsody where he played record company boss Ray Foster. Under a fright wig, shades and prosthetics no one watching the film would have picked him out (that’s him on the right in the main image above) and the role perhaps appealed to his love of prosthetic make up that had seen him play multiple characters in the Austin Powers films

It would certainly explain the huge array of characters Myers played in the 2022 mini-series ‘The Pentaverate’ that he wrote, starred and executive produced that was a return to his outlandish comedy roots. But the series came and went and was never re-commissioned  for another series.

The same year saw him appear in David O Russell’s star packed flop, ‘Amsterdam’ that again starred Margot Robbie and Myers in a blink and you’ll miss it cameo again under heavy prosthetics meaning that many did not recognise him.

His most recent cameo has been in the biopic, ‘Michael’ as Walter Yetnikoff the agent who got Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ video onto, at the time’ the all white music video channel MTV . Again it’s a role that you might just about make him out under the prosthetics.

The failure of 2008’s The Love Guru certainly seems to have knocked him back and apart from the TV series,  The Pentaverate, Mike Myers has not played the on screen lead in a feature film preferring to play small, at times single scene, cameos in heavy disguise but rumours of a Austen Powers 4 movie persist and we may yet see him once more in a films lead role.
