Obsession – REVIEW

movie flex

For single men who fixate on a woman, date her and then find that at best she’s mentally unstable, at worst psychotically dangerous must be an absolute nightmare. But this is not The Prince Harry Story instead Obsession is wish fulfilment gone awry.

Wish fulfillment…..

The man at the centre of this is Bear (Michael Johnstone) who works at a music store and has the hots for co-worker Nikki (Inde Navarrette). She’s friendly and apparently keen on him but he struggles with taking it to the next stage and formalizing a possible relationship. His moment comes when she loses her crystal necklace and he takes the opportunity to replace it with one he buys at New Age store that sell healing crystals, tarot cards, incense and anything that can be fobbed off as channelling the spirits – something which our Editor has wilfully misunderstood to excuse his drinking of vodka, whiskey, gin or frankly anything served at The Nags Head. (‘You’re fired!’ – Ed).

You’re my Obsession….

What Bear does pick up at the shop is the, ‘One Wish Willow’ something that can make your dreams come true and in his case it’s that Nikki will have an undying love for him. And his wish works. Unfortunately. Because what starts as a blissful dream for him quickly escalates into a nightmare to the detriment of not just Bear but also those around him. His friends, initially disbelieving, soon become only too aware that somethings not right with Nikki especially when a night with their friends reveals her obsessive behaviour becomes alarmingly apparent.

See it?

It is maybe a bit of a hokey premise but that theme of obsession in relationships is one that many might identify and here it’s taken to extremes with some horrifyingly graphic moments. As Nikki, Inde Navarrette is excellent and terrifyingly real and her characters nickname Freaky Nicky is increasingly appropriate as her Obsession worsens. But Bear’s reaction to his dream gone awry is easy to identify with and yet it’s that he is such a weak character unable or unwilling to end the relationship that saps sympathy for his predicament. Written and directed by Curry Barker this is his feature film debut having made a big impression with his YouTube short that saw him quickly signed up. Obsession is overlong and a little saggy towards the end but it bodes well for his future in horror.
