Normal – REVIEW

Normal ?

After the huge success of ‘Breaking Bad’ and later ‘Better Call Saul’, Bob Odenkirk’s pivot to action man was far from normal with the success of Nobody and its sequel. So its apt that his new film that he has co-written with Derek Kolstad is titled as Normal. Here’s he plays Ulysses a sheriff shipped into the small town that is the film’s title to cover the law enforcer position until a full time sheriff is appointed. ‘Good people, small problems’ he says in a voiceover and for him it’s also a distraction from a tragic incident in his past that causes him sleepless nights.

Taking his eager Deputy out on the most low levels of calls which rarely rise above neighbour disputes and occasional chats with the town mayor (Henry Winker) and a local bar owner (Lena Headey). But there’s always the query that something isn’t quite right ever since the original sheriff had been found dead in his pants lying face down in the snow with a fishing rod in his hand.

Carnage…

But when there’s an attempted bank robbery in town events take a turn for the lethal even more so when a Yakuza gang, (introduced in a brutal opening scene) are sent on their way. As co-writer Derek Kolstad is the screenwriter behind the John Wick franchise it’s little surprise that murderous mayhem unfolds and quickly escalates.

All this is choreographed by British director Ben Wheatley back on more familiar ground after helming blockbuster ‘The Meg 2’ and this is far more akin to his 2016 film ‘Free Fire’. In keeping with Kolstad and Odenkirk’s previous films, Normal is a violently enjoyable 90 minutes of carnage.
