Gremlins special edition ……

movie flex

One of the most beloved films of the 1980’s is Gremlins directed by Joe Dante and produced by Steven Spielberg and earned a healthy $165m at the box office. The fan base for the film is extraordinary and now there’s news of a special screening of Gremlins special edition. Special because its a 2.5 hours assembly cut that’s never been see before and strictly speaking is not even meant to exist.

When Joe Dante introduced the Gremlins special edition!

Screened on 30th April 2026 to a select audience no one knew quite what it was they were being invited to but it soon became clear when Joe Dante rocked up to introduce the film saying “This is a very unusual screening,…..You usually don’t go back into the archives and pull out stuff from the bin and show it to people, warts and all.”

The invited audience included Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky (who have penned Gremlins 3) , Drew Hancock (Companion), Rob Savage (The Boogeyman), Dan Berk and Robert Olsen (Novocaine), Brian Duffield (Whalefall), Akela Cooper (M3GAN), Guy Busick (Ready or Not), Atomic Monster producer Michael Clear, Adam Robitel (Escape Room) and 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell, among others.

Running at two hours and thirty five minutes, an hour longer than the original film its existence had been rumoured for years until Dante finally admitted to having a copy copped to it existing. In fact its believed to be the only known surviving version, and is a VHS version and gave it to The Gremlins Museum that’s and archive of props from run by Ian Grant who spent months digitizing it to make to screen-able.

So what in the Gremlins special edition? Well there’s alternate takes and unseen character arc where the first Gremlin doesn’t even show up for an hour but once they do appear there’s a lot of screen time with them – the bar scene alone goes on for 10 or more minutes and at one point we get to see them walk. And that Phoebe Cates’ Santa speech? Nowhere to be found at all in this version.

As for it being released either in cinemas or on Home Ent formats its seems that its likely to happen nearer the release of Gremlins 3 which at present is on the studio’s release schedule for 19th November 2027
