Talking to the animals
It was only six years ago that we had Robert Downey Jr appear in the title role of the big budget’ Dolittle’ which bombed. But despite that there’s news that Dr Dolittle returns but not in a big budget live action form but instead as a feature length animation courtesy of Sycamore Studios and Reel FX Animation Studios who were behind “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” as well as “The Book of Life”.
Dr Dolittle returns!
This new film titled, ‘Doctor Dolittle: King of the Wild’ will see the good doctor return from a livestreamed expedition that has gone badly wrong after accidentally putting a creature into a poacher’s grasp. To fix the disaster and restore his reputation, Dolittle must reunite with three former zoo allies for a rescue mission tied to the survival of the animal kingdom.
On scripting detail are Cal Brunker and Bob Barlen, who wrote the “PAW Patrol” films (which have been a big money earner for Paramount) and directing will be Timothy Reckart whose last film was 2017’s Christmas themed, ‘The Star’ and was previously Oscar nominated for his 2013 short film, ‘Head over heels’.
The history of Dolittle….
As Dr Dolittle returns once again this will be the latest in a long line of mostly poorly performing versions of the character inspired by the books of Hugh Lofting. Perhaps the most infamous is the 1967 film with Rex Harrison in the title role that was hugely expensive and was an equally huge flop. !970 saw a short lived animated TV series and it wasn’t until 1998 that a big screen live action film with Eddie Murphy in the title role and was a big hit that saw two sequels. A straight to video reboot in 2008 with Kyla Pratt saw a sequel the following year before Robert Downey Jr’s big budget effort appeared in 2010.
