Cold Storage director Jonny Campbell talks comedy-horror, gory effects & Vanessa Redgrave!

Cold Storage director Jonny Campbell is a British director whose most recent film is written by A-list screenwriter David Koepp from his own 2019 book and is full of CGI, prosthetic make up gnarly effects and even puppets.

Teacake and Naomi, two young employees of a self-storage company built on the site of an old US military base, have their wildest night shift ever when a parasitic fungus escapes from the lowest sublevel of the base, where it was sealed by the government decades before. As the temperature rises underground, this highly contagious microorganism multiplies and unleashes its terrors on the facility’s inhabitants – human and otherwise. With time running out, it’s down to Teacake and Naomi, with the help of a grizzled bioterror operative, to contain the rapidly mutating menace and prevent the explosive extinction of Mankind itself. Whilst the two leads are Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell its surprise support cast includes Liam Neeson, Lesley Manville and perhaps most unexpected of all is Vanessa Redgrave. Director Jonny Campbell has an impressive back catalogue of films nearly all with a strong thread of comedy that has taken in Phoenix Nights, Ant & Dec’s debut feature film, ‘Alien Autopsy’, Dr Who and TV series ‘Westworld’. The film is out on all formats for Home Entertainment release on 11th May 2026 with a whole load of great bonus features.

We chatted to Cold Storage director Jonny Campbell about how he landed the job, how Vanessa Redgrave was cast working with Steven Spielberg’s go to screenwriter and of course those gory special effects and all the problems that come with that……
