The rise of Billie Eilish

Now we’d be the first to admit that our Editor is not exactly down with the kids. Still reeling from the death of whistling wonder Roger Whitaker he is nonetheless aware of the huge popularity of Billie Eilish. With huge sales and even bigger tours Hit me Hard and Soft is a concert film with an element of behind the scenes documentary to it that she has co-directed with James Cameron but then as it is in 3D he’s the obvious choice capturing it all in pin sharp detail.

Hit Me Hard and Soft?

Flitting back and fore between stage performances recorded in the US and England along with behind the scenes (and under the stage) along with Cameron talking to her about her career. And it’s clear that for the fans at peak hysteria with not a dry eye (or seat) in the house there is nothing more important than seeing their idol perform.

In an era of social media its little surprise that the fans have likely recorded every possible angle on their phones rather than enjoying the moment. Though the songs do run the risk of being remarkably similar to each other it’s the lyrics that so many of the fans seem to identify with in a number of vox pops where the turmoil of adolescence has so many latch onto her songs that have helped them through awkward moments in their personal lives.

The fan experience….

And it’s that aspect of the film that makes occasional emotional experience as the fans sing along to her songs word for word with titles such as ‘Maybe I’m the problem’ it’s easy to see why her fans, many of a similar age, identify with Billie and her connection with the audience is frequently quite affecting.

There’s also the identification of her many nearly all female and adolescent fans with Billie’s own awareness of her sexuality. Performing in baggy clothing (and there are no costume changes here) there’s something admirable and refreshing about a female pop star who has refrained from pushing record sales by baring skin and flaunting her sexuality.

Like all concert films the longevity of Hit me Hard and Soft will be tied to the longevity of her career but as a film for the fans this will be a must see.
