After the recent Ready or Not 2 we have another shoot ‘em up splatter fest with the release of ‘They Will Kill You’ starring Zazie Beetz in a role that sets her up as credible future action heroine. Here she plays Asia Reaves – a name that’s splashed across the screen in what have become obligatory on screen chapter breaks, who 10 years previously with her younger sister had tried to escape their violent father that ended up with her imprisoned.
Now released she needs a job and answers an ad to work at a architecturally beautiful Manhattan building called The Vigil that on closer inspection has all manner of Satanic imagery in the exterior decoration that’s a hint at the potential horror to be found inside – a sort of a New York version of Meghan and Harry’s Montecito mansion. Met by the manager Lilith (Patricia Arquette) the front door is securely bolted behind Asia and having briefly met several of the guests that includes Tom Felton and Heather Graham (great to see her back on the big screen) she’s taken to her own living quarters. And it’s where the action begins with a bravura fight sequence that sees Asia takes on four marauding pig faced loons that she quickly dispatches and dismembers to gleefully gore filled effect that sets the tone for the rest of the film.
But the demise of the four is temporary as the would be victims quickly reconfigure to their pre-decapitated selves as they’ve made a deal with the Devil, Satan, Beelzebub, Meghan…call him what you will but they are now immortal. From here on in Asia has to survive in her mission which is to save her estranged sister Maria ( Myah’la).
Directed and co-written by Kirill Sokolov it’s heavily influenced by the comic book gore of Evil Dead 2 with a splash of Tarantino and a soupcon of Gareth Evans’ Raid films along with frequent comic book framing. It’s often frequently funny and often gruesomely inventive (an eyeball that takes on a life of its own is very Sam Raimi) but the action scenes are gleefully demented but never quite manage to top that first one in Asia’s room.
They Will Kill You all is brutal (extremely so), bloody and occasionally brilliant thigh becomes a little repetitive but it should assure both Beetz and director Sokolov a future in gore filled actioners.
