What The Last Starfighter did first…
Computer graphics for the big screen were in their infancy back in the early to mid 1980’s The Last Starfighter along with Tron were the first to use them.
The 1984 film starred Lance Guest as High schooler Alex Rogan who conquers the Starfighter video game, only to find out it was more than just a game, it was a test, so he is transported to another planet. He has been recruited to join a team of the best starfighters.
The origin of The Last Starfighter……
According to screenwriter Jonathan R Betuel, (who was working as a cabdriver when he wrote the first draft of the script), the idea for this movie came about because he wandered into a video arcade and saw a young boy playing a video game. At that time, he was reading the book about King Arthur, “The Once and Future King” by R.H. White. He wondered what would happen if a video game were a metaphorical sword in a stone, and a boy racked up an incredible score, which would cause a ripple effect across the universe. During the movie, when Centauri gets into trouble for using the game to recruit starfighters, it’s referred to as “The Excalibur Test”. Excalibur was, of course, King Arthur’s sword. Initially, Alex Rogan was to be from the suburbs, but director Nick Castle changed the location to a trailer park.
The film quickly became a favourite of adolescents and remains a fan favourite decades later. Now obviously older than the teen he played back in the 1980’s we got the opportunity to chat with Lance Guest who reveals how he landed the lead role in The Last Starfighter.
