Were there any Melania movie music mistakes?
With Donald Trump’s second term as US President proving divisive it would seem to have been a gamble to have launched a documentary about his wife Melania to the purported cost of $70m and give it a theatrical release. But the pushback has been apparent right from the start. With no press previews and a current box office gross of just $16m but it is musician’s who have been up in arms about the use of their songs and looking at it more closely there are certainly some Melania movie music mistakes that the film makers did not spot or just ignored.
Music rights have always been a thorny issue for filmmakers and can be a significant cost to a budget – the use of the Beatles ‘Yesterday’ in Richard Curtis film of the same name is one such example. But producer Marc Beckman addressed the issue recently specifically about Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood objection to the use of his score from The Phantom Thread in the documentary’s soundtrack. Unfortunately for Greenwood there is a clause in his contract that he must at least be contacted when his music is going to be re-used. However he has no way of stopping it being used even if he objects which is what happened with Melania.
So what were those Melania movie music mistakes….
But in certain cases the Melania movie music mistakes might have been deliberate because the use of Tears for Fears’ Everybody wants to rule the world’ might be a little too on the nose to have used the lyrics hence a music only version is used in the documentary.
But perhaps less obvious to the film makers is unwittingly having opened the film with The Rolling Stones ‘Gimme Shelter’ which includes the singer Merry Clayton powerhouse voice belting out,
‘Rape! Murder!
It’s just a shot away!
It’s just a shot away!’
and perhaps it was a subversive move for the Stones to allow the track to be used. Equally the documentary ends with ‘Sunny’ by Boney M – a pretty upbeat song to end on a high except one of the lyrics is…
‘Sunny
Thank you for the smile upon your face
Sunny
Thank you for the gleam that shows disgrace’
‘D’oh! The choice of so many of the songs was Melania’s herself but many artists refused the use of their work which included the estate of Prince, Guns n Roses (who were spilt about whether to allow their songs to be used), Grace Jones and several others. But that aside the documentary garnered a lot of attention and as the old saying goes ‘All publicity is good publicity’…..unless of course you’re Meghan Markle.
