Whilst we await the arrival of the new Peaky Blinders film we take a look at the real events that inspired the series and the film with the release of Peaky Blinders – The Real Story trailer.

In September 2013, Peaky Blinders, a bold and ambitious new period crime drama, landed on BBC Two. The gripping series followed the exploits of a Birmingham crime gang in the aftermath of the First World War and with its mix of stylish visuals, gritty atmosphere and amazing casting with Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill and Helen McCrory at the helm, it was an immediate hit… but nobody could have predicted the global behemoth it would become.

Over six thrilling series, it has inspired everything from haircuts and headwear to baby names and along the way has won awards galore. The series has earned some of the most famous of fans including David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Snoop Dogg and has risen through the ranks to become one of Britain’s best loved series. But the story of the real Peaky Blinders started over a century before the series cemented itself as a pop culture sensation.

Through historical documents and interviews with specialists including crime historian Carl Chinn – the world expert on Peaky Blinders and great-grandson of member Edward Derrick – the documentary separates fact from fiction to unearth the true story of the now famed gang. Chinn peels back the gang’s persona to reveal a fascinating and detailed account of the real outlaws and historical events at the heart of the hit series.

Interviews with series creator Steven Knight provide insight into his personal connections to the real criminal empire. Production designer Grant Montgomery and film and TV critic Michael Hogan also chart the cultural impact of the acclaimed series from page to screen and explore how it redefined the genre with its gripping storylines, genius needle drops and timeless characters.
