GOAT – REVIEW

GOAT?

The word GOAT today is usually an acronym for Greatest Of All Time but in Goat it’s about an actual goat who wants to be the GOAT. That goat is Will Harris (Caleb McLaughlin) a keen basketball player who as a child gets taken by his mum to see his local ‘roarball’ team the Thorns (a hyper kinetic version of basketball on treacherous terrains)  led by his idol and star player, a powerful panther, Jett  (Gabrielle Union). It inspires Will further to make the grade but 10 years later  he’s a fast food delivery driver who owes rent and finding that as a small goat he’s hardly compares to the rhino’s giraffes and other such immense creatures who make up the roarball teams.

That GOAT story…

But it’s when Will’s friends post a video that goes viral of him trouncing a professional player Mane, a gigantic horse of a player whose all gangsta attitude with dreadlocks. But its the Thorns  flashy owner warthog Flo (Jenifer Lewis) who spots the clip and , needing to revitalize her team in order to make it to prospective buyers that she recruits him much to the disdain  of the other players. Undeterred Will fights to establish himself as worthy player equal if not better than the others.

The underdog story who makes good is one that follows the expected template and tropes to prove himself and saving the day and whilst the film is not really about Will becoming the greatest of all time its more about his enthusiasms and ability to inspire the team back into top form again and that’s a decent enough message for any film.

The Greats Of All Time?

Along with the blockbuster Zootropolis 2 this is the latest animated feature with animals in the cast and whilst it never really approaches the heights of that Oscar nominated film what does set it apart is its stylish animation. The backgrounds have an impressionistic ambience to them, the roarball courts on a variety of surfaces that take in ice, fire, jungle and more are brilliantly realized and the animals all have enough characterization to make each stand out helped by a decent cast of vocal talent that includes Nick Kroll, David Harbour, Patton Oswalt & Jennifer Hudson. Much like the social media that features so heavily throughout this moves along at breakneck pace despite its formulaic tail…um …..tale.
