A Beautiful Break Up – REVIEW

A Beautiful Break Up ? Really?

A Beautiful Break Up would seem to be something of a myth when it comes to the end of a relationship and if our Editor’s is anything to go by then A Costly Court Injunction is a more likely title (‘You’re fired!’ –Ed). The couple at the centre of the film here are Ruby (Matylda Bajer) and Krish (Thaksh) who travel to his Uncle’s isolated mansion deep in the Indian countryside but not before a prologue introduces us to three sprits trapped in bottles within the long abandoned house.

Will it be A Beautiful Break Up?

Their intention is to have one last weekend together before they go their separate ways but things take a turn as they tidy up the house and the spirts are accidently released and the couple’s relationship that they hope to draw to an amicable close is soon revealed to be unstable and unravels in recriminations and repressed emotions surfacing.

A Beautiful film?

Essentially a supernatural story given a love story twist it’s not without its moments. But we spend far too long getting to know the couple in ponderous and not especially interesting detail – that Krish spends most of his time working on his laptop rather than enjoying their last weekend together suggests that Ruby is better off without a boyfriend who has all the charisma of hummus. There’s an urgent need to get those the spirits unleashed far earlier to liven up the up the proceedings.

Written and directed by Ajithvasan Uggina the story’s pace sags with scenes that need shortening and in several cases just cut from the film entirely as its 90 minute run time feel far longer. On the plus side the Indian countryside is stunning and the spirits themselves are nicely realized but A Beautiful Break Up is a little bit of a mundane movie.
