The Wrecking Crew – PRIME VIDEO

Just what is The Wrecking Crew?

Thankfully The Wrecking Crew is not a documentary about our Christmas party but there’s no less destruction and drinking going on at the hands of Jason Momoa and Dave Baitista who play Jonny and James respectively. Half-brothers from an errant Hawaiian father who starts the film in a rush to post a parcel suggesting that the frequency of the Honolulu postal service is even worse than the UK’s. But it’s not long before he’s mown down in the road ending up flatter than Meghan Markle’s Netflix viewing figures.

Let The Wrecking Crew wreck!

It’s an event that brings the estranged brothers reluctantly back together for their father’s funeral. Momoa’s Johnny is a hard drinking maverick cop who’s partner has just left him whereas Bautista’s James is a family orientated disciplined Naval commander. So it’s when they find that the local police have done barely anything to investigate as to who might have killed their father that the pair set about investigating the matter themselves. But being as they have little time for each another its initially independent of each other until the inevitably the leads draws them together helped by comic sidekick played by Jacob Batalon. There efforts to find out who killed their father and why sees them cross paths with mob boss and appropriately named Claes Bang but it’s not before all manner of carnage laden set pieces explode on screen.

The destructive duo…

Momoa and Bautista are ideally cast as a wrecking crew each with a number of action  films to their credit, most notably Momoa and their character’s initial disdain for one another will, according to the law of mismatched buddy films, see them forge an alliance and eventual friendship. They both are suitable muscle laden man mountain’s for such an  action film though you’ve got to wonder just how Momoa’s character, who just drinks relentlessly throughout the film, maintains such a ripped physique a technique that our own Editor swears by as does his doctor who told him ’You have the body of a f**king dropped lasagne!’

Action!

Helmed by director Angel Manuel Soto there’s a load of decent set  pieces here most notably a car v helicopter chase that owes much to the Fast & Furious films but is no less exciting here. And it’s not the only film that has its influence – the corridor fight in Oldboy gets a look in and overall the film plays like John Wick–lite, but that’s not a bad thing. Jonathan Topper’s script owes much to the ‘Lethal Weapon’ template and the jokes are often just Momoa giving characters’ off the cuff names (Fat John Cena being one of the better monikers) among many others. But the pair are a formidable on screen duo and The Wrecking Crew is an entertaining and intended franchise starter.
