The story that spiked Saipan directors interest!
For the Saipan directors the story of the 2002 World Cup was of huge interest. It was one of huge consequence too for the Republic of Ireland football team. Having scraped through the team including star player Roy Keane and led by manager Mick McCarthy to the island of Saipan to beginning training for the finals. And that’s where it quickly began to fall apart.
What the Saipan directors found…
That the hotel was a shadow of its former self without the facilities that an international football team needed. Their pitch was sub standard, the food was poor and the team didn’t even have footballs! For a player of Keane’s experience, skill, regard and lets be honest, temperament, it was unacceptable and he was increasingly vocal about it. For what for some players could be a once in a career opportunity to play football at the very highest level and Keane knew it. He had gone there dedicated to training, eating healthily and with a mental attitude to win. But when the rest of the team began treating it as a football themed Club 18-30 holiday and a manager who he regarded with disdain and became increasingly forthright in his opinions to his face and to the press too. It was inevitable that it would all come to a head and it did in the most explosive way.
What they tell us…
Saipan is that film. Starring Eanne Hardwicke and Steve Coogan as Keane and McCarthy respectively we got to chat with the directors Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’sa. We chatted with them about the casting, who was to blame for what happened and just what Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy thought of what is a compelling film.
