A lonely Frankenstein (Christian Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!
The Bride of Frankenstein was a black and white horror classic from Universal stable of monster movies back in the day but this new film from Warners looks very different from what we’ve seen in the past and should play as a nice counterpart to the Netflix Frankenstein film from Guillermo Del Toro that opens shortly.
Starring Jessie Buckley (who seems to be relentlessly busy with her film roles), Christian Bale ( and his make up is a throw back to the classic 1931 monster), Peter Sarsgaard ( the directors husband), Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal (the directors brother) and Penélope Cruz this promises to be a starry update of the story
This is the second remake of The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). The first was The Bride (1985) starring Sting and Jennifer Beals, also the 50th anniversary year of the original 1935 film. From the trailer this looks a very stylish version of the story and with such a great cast this would seem assured an audience.
