News of a Minecraft movie sequel
So when the studios don’t do preview screenings for journalists it’s always a bit of a hint that the studio have little confidence in the film and don’t want any bad word to leak out before its opening weekend and at least make a decent weekends worth of money before the word gets out. That would have seemed to have been the case with A Minecraft Movie with fans of the game decrying the trailer. As it is the studio need not have worried with the film eventually earning a monumental $958m making it the fifth biggest grossing film of 2025. So it comes as no surprise that there’s news of A Minecraft Movie sequel.
What Jason Momoa said about a Minecraft movie sequel
It’s Jason Momoa who has revealed that the sequel to the video game adaptation is going into production soon and will return as champion pro gamer Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison. Revealing to Jimmy Fallon when the film would go into production he said, ‘“Very soon. Dude. Bro, end of April.’ and then added, ‘The script is even better. It’s so good, I was laughing out loud. I haven’t laughed out loud in a very long time at a script. I was perplexed on the first script, this one I’m laughing out loud’
Director Jared Hess returns to helm the Minecraft Movie sequel from a script by Hess & Chris Galletta. The sequel is set for a 23rd July 2027 release.
Why audiences went wild….
The film made $162m on its opening weekend the third largest ever for the studio and fans went mad for the film. In fact they went absolutely berserk when the zombie jockey on a chicken appeared in the film. It saw audience members hurling popcorn in the air, streamers popped and much more around the auditorium and on one occasion somehow managed to smuggle a live chicken into the cinema and the ensuing mayhem saw the poor cinema ushers involved in a deep clean of the auditorium after each showing. Who knows what the sequel will inspire audiences to do?
