Possibly the worst selling greeting in any Valentine Card but ‘Die My Love’ is the latest film from acclaimed director Lynne Ramsey with Oscar winning Jennifer Lawrence as Grace. Loved up with her boyfriend Jackson (Robert Pattinson) we first see the couple exploring an old empty house that belonged to his Uncle whose demise is both gruesome and comic when revealed later in the film. Making plans for the house the pair consummate their decision with spur of the moment sex.
Catching up with them some time later they have moved in and she is happily pregnant with their first child who soon arrives. For couples it’s a moment of joy and delight indeed it certainly was for out Editor’s wife when her twins arrived although for our Editor it was more a back-up plan in case he ever needed a kidney (You’re fired!’ – Ed). But for Grace and Jackson it’s the beginning of a decline in their relationship and her mental health. With Jackson now on the road for long stretches with his job it leaves Grace on her own with the baby in a remote house to cope with her post-natal depression that slowly builds and builds.
It’s Jackson’s mother (Sissy Spacek) who is the only one to notice that Grace is beginning to unravel. Her mental decline sees Grace initially making off hand comments about being a mother but then she later begins crawling through the grass with a knife in her hand towards her baby or waking up crying uncontrollably – that last one also being how our Editor’s wife wakes up every morning when she looks over at our Editor (‘You’re definitely fired! – Ed).
This is very much Jennifer Lawrence’s film in a tour de force performance that is enhanced by Lawrence’s own public persona : often clumsy (that fall on the steps to collect her Oscar), sexy, daft (rarely takes herself seriously in interviews) and impulsive. Die My Love is not an easy watch especially for those who have suffered from post natal depression or have struggled to cope with a partner suffering from such and the film offers no relief from watching Grace’s descent but it’s a film that proves once more that Jennifer Lawrence is one of the best actresses of her generation.
