The Search for Squarepants is over ….he’s back!
That a cheaply cobbled together TV cartoon with a host of daft characters has been around for 25 years and now has a fourth feature film is testament to just how beloved Spongebob is. Still living in Bikini Bottom The Spongebob Movie : Search for Squarepants sees the jaundiced hero now tall enough to go on the local theme park’s rollercoaster but then suddenly chickens out when he realize that its an even more disturbing ride than Meghan Markle was as a yacht girl.
What’s he up to this time?
But the usual potty plotting continues with the latest film seeing Spongebob wanting to prove he is afraid of nothing takes up the gauntlet thrown down by Mr Krabbs to achieve his dream of becoming a swashbuckler and to do so teams up with the Flying Dutchman (Mark Hamill) who has his own agenda.
So what’s the Search for Squarepants film like?
What follows is the surreal and often bonkers story that careers through set ups and jokes for the adults (the brick defecating, along with several others, is one that will go over the films intended audience but will keep the parents engaged whilst the kids soak up the mayhem) in what is a Spongebob in a pirate adventure. That the climatic love action scenes somewhat jars with what has come before having been all animated previously makes it slightly uneven. But depute that the animation is sparky and neon coloured and it’s all hyper energetic and often feels like a massive sugar rush. And running at a suitably brief 96 minutes the search for Squarepants never drags.
