The Partisan – DVD

movie flex

2025 has seen a load of WWII true life films be released and The Partisan DVD is just one of them. It’s the story of Krystyna Skarbek a Polish agent of the British Special Operations Executive and purportedly Churchill’s favourite spy and it is easy to see why. Regarded as phenomenally brave she was involved in a whole load of covert operations in Nazi occupied France and Poland in many crucial missions. The Partisan covers one of those where she finds herself compromised and trapped in treachery where she must use her wily wits to get out alive.

Written and directed by James Marquand (son of the late Richard who helmed Return of the Jedi, the terrific thriller ‘Jagged Edge’ and the WWII film, ‘Eye of the Needle’) and he has cast Morgane Polanski (daughter of Roman) as Skarbek in an often engrossing tale. There’s a fleeting appearance from Malcolm McDowell and its Frederick Schmidt who is her male co-star in a film that’s has Skarbek front and centre and frequently finding herself in often life threatening scenarios in a bid to accomplish her objectives. It’s a story that’s certainly worth telling but there’s a feeling that her whole career was worthy of a series than a single film especially towards the end of this film that recounts the low key way  she saw out the end of the war and the undeserving way her life ended. Released on DVD The Partisan is a vanilla disc with no bonus features whatsoever. A commentary track from the director especially would seem to have been an essential or failing that a brief featurette about  Skarbek’s career and it is the lack of bonus features that, film aside, makes this a disappointing release for the Home Entertainment market.
