A new version of the superhero?
With James Gunn’s Superman proving to be the most successful superhero film of 2025 we now get the Supergirl trailer who we first glimpsed briefly towards the end of the Gunn’s summer blockbuster.
What we know about story from the Supergirl trailer
It is believed that the film follows Kara Zor-El’s story and her darker origin before she finally made her way to Earth. James Gunn has said previously that, “we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life“. Gunn indicates that this incarnation is an Argo City survivor rather than being from Krypton itself, more akin to her comic book debut in 1959.
The cast….
Starring Milly Alcock (the fifth actress to portray Kara Zor-El in live-action and the third in film), Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa who returns to DC as he previously played as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe. He’s also been campaigning to play Lobo for years and when he first joined DC he thought he would’ve been offered the part but he was offered Aquaman instead.
Behind the scenes stories….
Craig Gillespie directs the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira and this looks to be a very different entity form the early 1980’s Helen Slater version of the superhero. Nogueira was originally hired for a spin-off of the Flash starring Sasha Calle as Supergirl, but the project was scrapped when Gunn and Peter Safran took over leadership on the upcoming slate of DC film adaptations and she was then brought back for the new film
Supergirl will be released in the UK on 26th June 2026
