Dreamers – director Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor talks immigration & love!

2020 Screen International Star of Tomorrow, Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor is a producer whose work focuses on Black, Queer and Female-led content for Film and TV. She runs Joi Productions, which received a BFI Vision Award, a £2 million fund aimed at supporting Independent Production companies. In 2019, Joy produced the 2019 hit, Blue Story, directed by Rapman grossing £4.5m at the UK Box Office. After dfirecting a number of short films she releases her first full length feature film, ‘Dreamers.

As her freedom is threatened, Isio, a Nigerian migrant freshly placed at a UK asylum removal centre, searches for the will to battle the system and finds a kindred spirit who might help her through. Freedom is elusive, but love is eternal.

We chatted with Joy about the making of the film, the immigration detention centres and her love of love!
