Why Aliens 2.5 was cancelled….

movie flex

Like the Predator franchise (until Dan Trachtenberg rebooted to to huge acclaim) the Alien franchise has been of variable quality. So whilst the first two films are regarded as classics what followed dipped sharply. But there was always a rumour of an Aliens 2.5, a sequel that would follow directly on from James Cameron’s film that ignored everything that happened in Alien 3 which killed off off Newt right from the start.

Written by director Neill Blomkamp there was even concept art that appeared in 2015 and 20th Century Fox (at that point not bought out by Disney ) even greenlit the film but by end of that year it was put on hold then seemingly cancelled. So why was Aliens 2.5 cancelled? Sigourney Weaver knows according to a recent Q&A of Alien in Paris recently when an audience member asked her directly about it with her replying….

‘Well, I think like many of us, I was a big admirer of Neill [Blomkamp]. His movie was so striking and I worked with him on a movie called [Chappie]. And I loved working with Neil and he had this idea of bringing Ripley and Newt back. It was a wonderful script and unfortunately, it was at that point I think that Ridley Scott decided to be very possessive about the series and really drilled down on his prequels. And so I think it was a disaster for that project. We were never able to… I think Neil in fact just gave up and he’s so talented. I wish him all the best.’

Ridley Scott has always claimed that there was only ever a treatment for the film but both Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron have previously said that they had read Blomkamp’s script and it seems likely that Scott put a block on it in order to make Alien Covenant
