Domestic violence is a staple of the TV soap opera as well as films & TV dramas (most notably the 1996 BBC drama, ‘Trip Trap’ that cast actor Kevin Whatley against type) and the latest to explore that theme is, ‘Trapped’. Despite its poster suggesting that this is some sort of kidnap drama it instead sees Raye (Gina Jones) in a long term relationship with Frank (Shane McCormick) who fit the opposites attract template. Think Meghan & Harry – one is a duplicitous half witted liar whilst the other is….OK that’s a bad example but Raye is a quiet meek slightly built woman whereas Frank is a heavily tattooed bruiser with the trigger hair temper of a Vietnam vet with PTSD going through a divorce and is as appropriate a partner as Prince Andrew employed by a teenage clothes designer. Frank’s instability is further pressured by his estranged father now at death’s door in a hospital bed and arguing with his far more equitable brother Lee (Craig Fairbrass).
Almost inevitably it’s not long before Raye finds herself yet again victim to his violent outbursts and his seemingly uncontrollable fury as he rages at her, his brother and frankly anyone who has the misfortune to be in his orbit. Like any drama dealing with domestic violence it poses the question just why has Raye stayed with Frank for so long and the script does give her a back story told in flashback that offers more of an understanding of such a scenario that so many women (and to be fair some men too) find themselves in. With a script that sees more C words thrown around than Kier Starmer reacting to his latest polling figures much of the dialogue rings true in what is a small budget film that and an often uneasy watch.
