Keeper – REVIEW

movie flex

‘She’s something of a keeper’ is something no father in law to be has ever said about Meghan Markle but this is not that film. Director Osgood Perkins has made quite the impression over the past year with his two previous horror films and his third film , ‘Keeper’ has been much anticipated. From a script by Nick Lepard who gave us 2024’s shark movie ‘Dangerous Waters’ we now have Keeper and it is a far different beast.

Starting with a montage of attractive woman with a serene music overlay we’re jolted out of it by several disturbing images of the same women bloodied and in distress before we settle on Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and her boy friend Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) both still loved up after a year and now off to spend some quality time together at his parents luxury cabin in the woods albeit one that has no curtains and the only door that locks is the bathroom.

It’s Liz’s friend who wants all the gossip wanting to know if he’s asked her about kids but equally makes her friend aware that she thinks Malcolm is to good to be true and must be married. But Liz is having none of it in fact there’s even a delicious looking boxed up chocolate cake awaiting them on arrival…. So delicious that Liz craves more of it in the middle of the  night and wolfs down the rest of it.

Not only does she have stomach ache for the rest of the night but for the next few days she begins to hear voices in the air vents and sees unsettling visions. Suddenly the richly hued wood cabin begins to harbour things that go bump in the night or more specifically things that hide in the dark corners. Perkins has framed many of the shots so as to draw your eye to the background and what might be there and often is there. But Liz’s creeping paranoia comes to a head when Malcolm is called back to the hospital for an emergency that things really begin to spiral for Liz.

It’s something of a slow build as to what is going on that’s hinted at throughout and draws on the supernatural with nods to the Evil Dead films and this is very much a directors film. Perkins has made quite the impact as a horror director of the excellent and unnerving ‘Long legs’ and followed up by the deliriously demented ‘The Monkey’ and ‘Keeper’ rounds off his unofficial horror trilogy in a very much different style again. This is far more steadily paced which might frustrate with none of the outrageous gallows humour of The Monkey or disturbing portrayal of a serial killer in Long Legs. Instead it plays far more on atmosphere and the occasionally unsettling vision leaving audiences to figure out just what is happening to Liz in that cabin and in that respect is very different from what Perkins has done before but nonetheless shows a director at the top of his game and arguably the best director of horror in years.
