2022’s M3GAN a film that saw AI operated doll get murderous was a huge hit (and spawned endless memes) so a M3GAN 2.0 sequel was inevitable in a follow up that sees what looks like an emotionally bankrupt malevolent sex doll wage an all out war on a better looking superior model prompting unfounded rumours that the story was inspired by Megan Markle and Princess Catherine.
But after the cataclysmic finale of the first film saw M3GAN seemingly destroyed the sequel reveals that her DNA or her actual AI programme is alive and well. But for Gemma (Allison Williams) whose robotics engineer programme formed the basis of Megan’s existence that put both her own and her niece Cady’s life in peril, has been through hell. Two years later this follow up film now sees the AI engineered programme fall into the hands of covert government agency with a second doll ‘Amelia’ being used to carry out deadly missions. But when Amelia goes rogue and starts wiping out anyone who might be a threat to her it means that Gemma and Cady find themselves on her hit list.
Directed and co-written by Gerard Johnstone once more this sequel is a lot more convoluted, plot wise drawing in government operatives and a hi tech conglomerate who want to buy out Gemma’s business. But both Gemma her and her two colleagues as well as Cady soon find themselves in danger when M3GAN persuades them to resurrects her in order to protect them from the even more murderous AI doll, Amelia.
Much like the first film this doesn’t tread the all out horror path and is far more action orientated than its pre4decessor. But what it does ramp up is the laughs and there are loads here that take in Steven Segal films and an hilarious rendition of Kate Bush’s, ‘This Woman’s Work’, a profoundly moving and emotionally charged song that will now be forever amusingly parodied here. Added to this also is the always excellent Jemaine Clement, once again playing a baddie, as a wheelchair bound, AI chip-in-the-brain CEO .
At two hours it’s a longer film and is far more schlocky albeit with a decent budget and in typically Hollywood style it’s unable to resist an end scene that lectures on the dangers of AI. But that aside M3GAN 2.0 is a lot of fun that plays it far more for laughs than horror.
