In the pantheon of Looney Tunes cartoons, after Bugs Bunny, the Wil.E.Coyote films that saw him relentlessly and catastrophically fail to catch the roadrunner using products from the ACME corporation. It was the same reformatted joke over the five minute duration of the cartoons and yet it was endlessly inventive and was a firm favourite. So turning it into a 100 minute feature film would seem a huge stretch for ‘Coyote vs ACME’.
Why is the Coyote vs ACME ?
But what director Dave Green and his screen writers have done has been inspired by an article by Ian Frazier from the New Yorker. So here Wil.E.Coyote, after another disastrous day in pursuit of the roadrunner, hires low rent attorney Kevin Avery (Will Forte) to sue the Acme Corporation for their always malfunctioning products and sees him face off to the company’s top legal rep, an odious arrogant Buddy Crane (John Cena).
It’s a genius concept and the film manages to include all those Looney Tunes favourites from a Bugs Bunny cameo to Foghorn Leghorn as the ACME corporation’s CEO and even an animated Peter Lorre that many might have forgotten (and younger audiences are unlikely to know). And this has seamlessly blended excellent animation with live action that evolved greatly since ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ and ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’
What went on behind the scenes?
That the film was dumped as a tax write off is something of a gut punch to both the filmmakers and audience because unlike like, say ‘Looney Tunes Back in Action’, this film really knows how to use the characters cleverly (a Tasmanian Devil spouting incomprehensible gibberish in court to defend the company is one of many highlights). The film was destined never to see the light of day and it was only that fans and the filmmakers led by an incandescent Will Forte and Dave Green fought to get the decision reversed that saw Ketchup Entertainment buy the film (that Ketchup jokes that itself is a part of the ACME corporation is one of the myriad of in-jokes that makes the film re-watcheable). There’s a certain irony too in the films theme of the little man against Goliath reflecting the films production history to get a release.
After the blockbusters, the tail end of summer is usually a dumping ground but Coyote vs Acme is an absolute unmissable delight.
