Cinema’s enfant terrible is back!
Though he passed away in 2011 the late great director Ken Russell was something of an enfant terrible of cinema having baited the censors with several of his films but it is probably The Devils that is most infamous. Regarded as an enduring masterpiece of cinema that starred Academy Award®-winner Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed, the film is a prescient epic of obsession and corruption – and a defining work of art from the director seminal filmmaker Ken Russell.
The story of The Devils….
Based on Aldous Huxley’s novel “The Devils of Loudon” and John Whiting’s play “The Devils.” Both are inspired by the Loudon Possessions of 1634. Many aspects come from real-life events, including Grandier’s name, his conviction of sorcery, and his death by burning at the stake. Set in 17th-century France where Father Urbain Grandier’s protection of the city of Loudun from the corrupt Cardinal Richelieu is undermined by a sexually repressed nun’s accusation of witchcraft.
Restored after 55 years!
Assembled from the original camera negative, this new 4K restoration presents Ken Russell’s definitive version of THE DEVILS by referencing the edit he privately constructed in 2004. KEN RUSSELL’S THE DEVILS is the uncut and unfiltered theatrical experience that Russell always envisioned – and the first time the film will be presented restored in 4K.
Russel was a Catholic himself and believed that the story was far more to do with political intervention than demons and the supernatural and the film had a number of shots and sequences that were excised by the censors for both US and UK audiences as tit was felt it was blasphemous rather than as Russell had intended that it was dealing with blasphemy.
With a terrific cast the film is now being released restored as Russell intended and will be shown in cinemas for a week in October 2026
