A life in film…..
With 73 credits to his name as actor and often director too Clint Eastwood has an enviable back catalogue of films that has seen him win four Oscar. Having directed what would seem to be his last film, ‘Juror #2’ in 2024 it would seem that 96 years of age he has deservedly retired. But did you know the iconic roles Clint Eastwood refused?
The iconic roles Clint Eastwood refused….
Having established himself in the excellent Sergio Leone trilogy of westerns as the man with no name in a kind of what could loosely be described as a heroic role he would find himself ten years later being offered the role of Superman. Understandably it was a role Clint Eastwood refused realising that it just was not right for him having played a ‘not by the rules’ cop in a few Dirty Harry roles earlier in the 1970’s. But that a aside he was still approached about playing the title role in Warren Beatty’s 1990 live action comic book film ‘Dick Tracy’. Again because his signature role as Dirty Harry was the antithesis of the comic book hero.
The role model…..
But it did not stop there when it came to superhero roles because Frank Miller’s 1986 comic “The Dark Knight Returns” portrayed Batman much like Dirty Harry and at 1985’s The Comics Journal Miller said,
“I think Clint Eastwood is more in touch with what we should do with superheroes than virtually anybody in comics. Dirty Harry is clearly larger than life; his behavior would certainly land him in jail. But that’s irrelevant, what is relevant is that, through all his hostility, and despite his dirty language, Harry is a profoundly, consistently moral force, administering the ‘Wrath of God’ on murderers who society treats as victims.”
So when Christopher’s Nolan’s ‘Batman Beyond’ was going into production consideration was given to Eastwood playing a retired Bruce Wayne – a great idea that unfortunately never made it to the screen
