Could this be James McAvoy’s boldest move yet? Having worked on so many big films for top directors, ‘California Dreamin’ is actor James McAvoy’s directorial debut.

It is based on a true story of two Scottish lads from Dundee who conned the music industry by pretending to be an established Californian rap duo, bagging a record deal and appearing on MTV until their scam unraveled in spectacular fashion. The film is reviewed here

James McAvoy’s boldest move yet?

Back in 2013 there was also a documentary of the real lads and their story called “The Great Hip Hop Hoax”. Producer Danny Page said that he had gone to multiple other directors, before he sent the idea and script to James McAvoy. He was then pleasantly surprised when McAvoy’s agent replied that he’d be on board with directing the movie.

Behind the scenes….

As a bit of trivia about the film but at the final concert, the production had booked a venue and producer Danny Page and team distributed advertisements to get people to come. They didn’t expect many to show up, or stay long, but the venue filled out with 2,000 people who willingly came and stayed throughout the entire filming of the concert scene. They were truly enjoying the music and their reactions in the film are genuine.

About James McAvoy boldest move yet he says….

James McAvoy talks about a whole load of things including his desire to direct, finding the right script, working class Scottish stories, aspirations, a film that is a movie, Scottish movie stars and Karen Gillan.

The film is out now in UK cinemas on nationwide release
