Sally James and the unknown Tiswas presenters
As you will be aware we had the pleasure of a lengthy interview with the lovely Sally James about Tiswas. For those not in the know Tiswas was a hugely influential Saturday morning kids TV show from the later 1970’s into the early 1980’s hosted by Chris Tarrant and Sally James aided by Lenny Henry, Bob Carolgees and John Gorman as well as a host of unknown Tiswas presenters.
Ostensibly a kids TV show it gained a huge cult audience with students and adults alike and had an array of eclectic guests that included Bernard Manning, Michael Palin and bands as diverse as Motorhead and Top of the Pops dance troupe Pan’s People. The first series was meant to run for 11 shows, but strike action by technicians cut it to just 9 shows. ATV management were still impressed, and commissioned a second series later in the year.
Those unknown Tiswas presenters….
Sally James came to the show a little later in the run and became the main presenter alongside Chris Tarrant who formed an iconic duo who fronted the show for a number of years until Tarrant left to do a late night adults version titled, ‘OTT’. But though the two were the face of the show many might not be aware that there were quite a few other but unknown Tiswas presenters who came and went and have since been forgotten in the mists of time. To that end we chatted with Sally about them, why they left and where they went.
