Fuze – REVIEW

Fuze the film ….

Director David Mackenzie’s latest film, ‘Fuze’ has a starry cast led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Sam Worthington and Theo James though it was rumoured that Peter Dinklage, Warwick Davis & Verne Troyer were to star until the film was recast and alas, ‘Short Fuze’ was not to be (‘You’re fired!’ – Ed).

Fuze facts….

From a script by Ben Hopkins it’s a return to those old school heist movies that here sees a massive WWII bomb uncovered on a building site where the police evacuate the area and the army bomb disposal unit led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson are called in to diffuse the device. But they’re not the only ones in the vicinity with a gang of five that includes Theo James and Sam Worthington using the situation to break into an underground vault in a very Hatton Garden robbery style.

To set you off…..

It’s a sleek and riveting first act that sees the bomb on a near constant trigger hair of going off whilst at the same time the gang are on the verge of being discovered by police units securing the immediate bomb blast radius. And in keeping with heist movies nothing goes to plan and into the mix are thrown several twists and turns of which many are of little surprise. But equally there’s too much leeway in their plan for things to go wrong that makes the gang’s plot lose credibility and despite the filmmakers acting under advice of the Met police’s own specialist advisors that makes the procedure of such an incident credible it’s where the plot goes afterwards that is far less persuasive that also includes a pointless epilogue.

Mackenzie is a decent director and there’s a workmanlike but uninspired telling of the defusing of the bomb and burglary of a vault where a little more flair would not have gone amiss. But a catchy cast and a break neck 91 minute running time propels the film and whilst Fuze is far from being a bomb it’s not the blast it could have been.
