The Super Mario Galaxy Movie….
In terms of video game to film adaptations for film things have come a very long way since the disastrous live action Super Mario Bros in 1993. But 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie was one of the year’s biggest earners with haul of more than $1.3b. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sequel picks up with a host of new characters including the beloved Yoshi and villain of the piece Bowzer is now shrunken into miniature form and kept in check by Mario and Luigi.
What’s going on in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
But all of this is soon to change with the introduction of Princess Rosalina who is kidnapped by Bowzer jr and it’s the plumber brothers along with Mario’s secret crush Princess Peach to the rescue. And it’s their escapades as they go about their quest that sees a whole new raft of characters that did nit appear in the first film now get their moment in this sequel. So along with Rosalina and Yoshi we also get Fox McCloud all thrown into the mix in mash up of Mario’s world of adventures to varying degrees of success.
A better sequel?
But this first sequel is something of a mixed bag of hits and misses. On the plus side the Super Mario Galaxy Movie incorporates many of the best elements of the games with are Easter eggs galore. The animation is as vibrant as might be expected from the excellent Illuminations Studios who are behind the Minions films and the images burst off the screen. But there’s a lot going on here that all but those with ADD might find bewildering and chaotic. And Fox McCloud, another fan favourite, is shoehorned in to little notable effect.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie has problems not dissimilar to the first film and for audiences unfamiliar with Mario lore might find this frequently incomprehensible but for die hard gamers this has everything.
