What is The Spin?
‘The Spin’ is a gentle Irish road movie with Dermot (Brenock O’Connor) and Elvis (Owen Colgan) and owners of a small record shop in Omagh. No CD or downloads here. Vinyl is their thing but the shop is hardly bustling with business and when their landlord Sadie (Tara Lynne O’Neill) rocks up at the shop chasing her rent which the pair have not paid for months and are now in serious. The ultimatum – pay what you owe or the shop gets closed.
The Spin spins a tale…
Salvation arrives when Dermot finds a farmer in Cork selling a stack of rare blues records by Robert Johnson for a pitiful £30 far short of their real value of £40k. So the bulk of the film sees the pair of them set off on a road trip in a clapped out car. And in the tradition of road movies there’s a whole load of misadventures that takes in a nun (Claire Malone), a stripper (former Pussycat doll Kimberley Wyatt now make credible strides into acting) and a possible romance.
But for the duo it’s all about the money with Elvis having rashly promised his daughter a pony and Dermot considering leaving his girlfriend Rose (Maura Higgins) and leave Ireland to pursue a career as a musician in the US. Bur like the faustian rumour that Robert Johnson selling his soul are Dermot and Elvis selling their souls too?
See it?
The Spin is enjoyably played by the whole cast with O’Connor and Colgan making an especially enjoyable on screen partnership with rapid fire banter that occasionally is so quick that at times it’s easy to miss a quip. Never outstaying its welcome it’s an endearing little film that’s nicely handled by director Michael Head, himself an actor, who gets the best from his cast in a change of genre from his previous gangster films making this well worth a look. Give it a spin.
