Andre is an Idiot – REVIEW

Andre is an idiot? really?

There are so many who spring to mind to be named placed in such a documentary title: Harry, Keir, Megan amongst many. The man being regarded as Andre is an idiot here is Andre Ricciardi, a San Francisco advertising executive with a gleefully care free attitude to life. His wife he married on the spur of the moment when she needed a US visa, their consequent children are adored and are on first name terms with him, his advertising is refreshingly off the wall and he’s led a somewhat hedonistic lifestyle. That is until the day he gets a colonoscopy and finds he has stage 4 cancer. Having turned down the chance to have taken the test a year earlier with his friend there might have been a chance and on telling his mother about the test result her reply is, ‘What a f**king idiot!’

Andre is an idiot…but he’s very funny!

This documentary then follows his path as he undergoes treatment with typically irreverent style. He is a natural born entertainer and his view askew of the world and how he faces up to the treatment he undergoes is engaging if at times uncomfortable viewing. His bid to raise awareness sees him recruit his former advertising colleagues to come up with a campaign that’s as off the wall as might be expected with posters of photos that look like arseholes such as the core of an orange, the hole at the top of a tub of wet wipes and of course Brooklyn Beckham (alright, we made up that last one). The documentary follows episodes as he engages with a website for Death Yells, comic stop motion scenes of his chemotherapy and at one point sees him even give serious consideration to visiting an Italian doctor who does head transplants!

In memorium

Humour is  Andre’s defence but as the documentary progresses and he becomes emaciated and vulnerable as his liver and kidneys begin to falter and shut down the seriousness and inevitability of his condition takes its toll on him. The concept of a character facing up to death is not a new one for a film but Andre is such a quirky character and enjoyable company that it’s hard not to get emotionally involved with his plight.
