We got a first glimpse of the Hamnet trailer at the end of summer and word was already circulating about the film being a potential awards winner. Well the film has played at several film festivals and that word of mouth has turned to an awards win at the Toronto Film Festival winning the People’s Choice award and is not staring to join critics lists as a likely Oscar contender.
It tells the story of Agnes – the wife of William Shakespeare – as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her only son, Hamnet. A human and heart-stopping story as the backdrop to the creation of Shakespeare’s most famous play, Hamlet. The film is described as a powerful story of love and loss and stars Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn from the Oscar winning director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland).
Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley also starred in “The Lost Daughter” (2021), but they shared no scenes together.
Hamnet is released in cinemas on 9th January 2026
