With a career in film that reaches back to the decades Woody Allen was a writer- director who the stars queued up to work with. That was until his step daughter Dylan dropped a bombshell revelation that he had molested her from a very young age. It’s a claim that Woody Allen has vehemently denied maintaining his innocence. Since then actors a number of big name actors have refused to work with him or expressed regret and having appeared in his films including Michael Caine, Colin Firth and Greta Gerwig and the Woody Allen cancel culture continues to this day.
Ralking to the Wall Street Journal recently he said, “If an actor says, ‘I won’t work with him,’ basically, the actor is thinking, ‘I’m doing a good thing,’ from his point of view, ‘I’m making a contribution, I’m making a statement,……..But he’s really making a mistake. Some day he may learn that.’
He went on to say, “I would think they would have more common sense, when they read about the situation. What surprises me, always, is how ready and willing people are to embrace it,” he said. “I would think someone reading the details would think, ‘That’s a little dicey looking to me.’
His Former wife Mia Farrow Mia has explained that she had managed to separate her own experiences as a collaborator of Allen’s and the “trials and tribulations” that followed in their personal lives.
Frequently Oscar nominated he has 4 wins to his name for Annie Hall ( best screenplay & Director), Hannah and her Sisters & Midnight in Paris. He turns 90 this year and his output as a writer director has been prolific truing out a movie at least every other year since 1969 with his most recent film being 2023’s ‘Coup De Chance’ that had a cast of unknowns. Quite whether the Woody Allen cancel culture will end for him at such a late stage in life is open to debate.
