2025 has been a quite brilliant year for successful horror films of which arguably the best is Weapons that has had phenomenal success earning $263m world wide when the film only cost $40m. Its success now sees the announcement of a Weapons prequel.
Writer-director Zach Cregger has said that the prequel movie will be centered on hair-raising villainess Aunt Gladys, played memorably and to unsettling effect by Amy Madigan. The director told Fangoria magazine, ‘“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it……. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullsh–.” he them went on to state that “I was ready,” Cregger said of the prequel. “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
According to an interview with IO9, the film had a chapter devoted to Gladys’ backstory and Creeger allegedly offered Madigan a choice of two back stories for her ( which we wont reveal as they’ll ruin the film for anyone who’s not seen it just yet!) but it should form part of the prequel.
At present Cregger is about to start shooting a Resident Evil film that will be followed y sci-fi film, ‘Flood’ so its unknown whether he will be helming the Weapons prequel. With Halloween just around the corner Aunt Gladys is sure to be a costume favourire with makeup department head Leo Satkovich reflecting on the character’s popularity: “It’s something that’s so surreal to me that I feel like I’m still processing … We knew that we were creating a very special character. I personally just do not feel I was prepared for just how much of a chokehold the world was going to be in.”
