Formerly known as the Rock the now actor Dwayne Johnson has cut out a formidable career as an actor and was for some years the highest earing actor with films like Jumanji, Jungle Cruise, Skyscraper and Moana. But his star has fallen slightly after the failure of Black Adam but he making quite some return with a dramatic role for The Smashing Machine that saw him get a 15 minute standing ovation at the recent Toronto Film Festival. So we get a glimpse at what to expect with the release of The Smashing Machine trailer.
In the film he portrays former MMA/UFC champion Mark Kerr aka “The Smashing Machine” in a story based on the true events surrounding Kerr’s life and rise through the MMA world which was unfortunately derailed by his opioid addiction.
Co-starring as his wife is Emily Blunt having starred together in ‘Jungle Cruise’ but this is a far different film and there’s a buzz of awards around the film….but we’ll see as there’s still a long way to go to the Golden Globes, BAFTA and the Oscars. The Smashing Machine marks Benny Safdie’s solo directorial debut and his first narrative film he had directed without his brother and long-time creative partner Josh Safdie after they ended their partnership five years after the release of Uncut Gems so that each could explore and develop separate film projects and this looks like a winner.
We had the similarly themed The Iron Claw which was another true story which deserved a far wider audience and also had award rumours so hopefully this will do well when its released.
