Continuing her ascent into stardom Sydney Sweeney takes on a challenging role with the release of the Christy trailer about the International Boxing Hall of Fame icon Christy Martin.
Based on true events, Christy stars Sweeney as the titular Martin, who grew up in small-town West Virginia and began to make a name for herself for her fighting prowess. With the guidance of Jim (Ben Foster) — her trainer and manager who eventually becomes her husband — Martin’s profile rises as a boxer amid increasing challenges in her personal life.
Beside Sweeney other cast members include Katy O’Brian, Merritt Wever, Ben Foster, Ethan Embry, Chad L. Coleman, Valyn Hall and Tony Cavalero. David Michôd directed and co-wrote the film with Mirrah Foulkes from a story by Katherine Fugate.
At the Toronoto International Fill Festival she revealed that she packed on 30 pounds to embody the role of the world-class fighter. She explained, “I had a nutritionist work with me as well as a weight trainer and a boxing trainer,” Sweeney explained, “We upped my calorie intake and I started taking a lot of protein shakes and supplements and eating everything. I ate a lot of Smuckers, a lot of PB and J sandwiches, milkshakes, kind of just constantly always eating because we were so active. I was constantly burning it all off at the same time. So keeping it all up was quite a challenge.”
It would seem to have paid off as early reviews have been positive with talk of a possible Oscar nomination for Sweeney. The film is written and directed by David Michod whose previous films include Animal Kingdom.
